Cocktails, Mocktails and Summer Sips: The 2026 CATIE Award Finalists for Innovative Mixology
The 2026 CATIE Awards' Innovative Mixology category celebrates exactly that. This year's finalists approached the challenge from three very different angles. One transformed a childhood favorite into an interactive experience. Another reimagined a classic whiskey cocktail for a wedding. The third proved that zero-proof beverages deserve every bit as much culinary attention as their spirited counterparts.

Summer events call for refreshing drinks, but today's guests expect more than something cold in a glass. They want an experience. Whether it's a beautifully balanced zero-proof creation or a cocktail with a story behind it, beverage programs have become an extension of a caterer's creativity.

WINNER: "Coke Float 2.0" – Proof of the Pudding
Sometimes the most innovative idea starts with something familiar.
For an event at the World of Coca-Cola's Beverage Lab, Proof of the Pudding took the nostalgic Coke float and turned it into a playful science experiment. Instead of simply serving soda and ice cream, the team designed a station inspired by a research laboratory, complete with scientific terminology, customizable ingredients, and interactive presentation.
The classic float became the foundation rather than the finished product. Guests selected from Coca-Cola, Fanta, or berry-infused Sprite before customizing their drink with boba pearls, passion fruit syrup, crème anglaise, whipped cream, mint, and a rich Mexican Coke reduction. Even dietary restrictions became part of the creative process through a specially developed almond milk ice cream that behaved like traditional ice cream in the float.
The presentation sealed the experience. Drinks were assembled using an "Experiment Protocol," with pipettes, laboratory glassware, and playful scientific instructions guiding each step. It felt part beverage station, part interactive exhibit, and perfectly at home inside Coca-Cola's immersive Beverage Lab.
It's easy to see why the judges gave this one top honors. The team didn't just reinvent a drink. They reinvented how guests experienced it.
Finalist: "Japanese Old Fashioned" – Good Gracious! Events
Some cocktails tell a story before the first sip.
Created for a black-tie wedding, Good Gracious! Events' Japanese Old Fashioned was inspired by one of the couple's earliest dates together. Built around Japanese whisky, the cocktail layered honey syrup, chamomile tea, lemon, and cardamom bitters into a drink that felt lighter and more delicate than a traditional Old Fashioned while still honoring the classic.

The service was just as memorable.
Rather than circulating on trays, each cocktail arrived on a Japanese-style conveyor belt in crystal glassware resting on custom coasters featuring the couple's monogram. Guests weren't simply handed a drink. They watched it arrive, turning cocktail service into part of the entertainment.
Behind the scenes, however, the process required remarkable precision. House-made syrups, brewed chamomile tea, custom clear ice, hand-cut citrus, and carefully batched cocktails all came together so the conveyor could keep moving without sacrificing quality.
The result was a cocktail rooted equally in craftsmanship and hospitality.
Finalist: "Pineapple Rosemary Shrub" – Schaffer
Mocktails continue to evolve, and Schaffer's Pineapple Rosemary Shrub is a perfect example of why.
Rather than trying to imitate an alcoholic cocktail, this drink stands confidently on its own. Bright pineapple meets rosemary's pine-like aroma, while lime and ginger beer add acidity, spice, and lift. The result is refreshing, layered, and surprisingly complex.

The team also leaned into the unique qualities of a shrub, building the drink around a vinegar-based foundation instead of treating it as simply another alcohol-free option. That decision gave the beverage structure and depth while introducing many guests to an ingredient they may never have encountered before.
Visually, the drink made just as strong an impression. Crisp dehydrated pineapple slices became edible garnishes, adding sculptural height alongside fresh rosemary. Every detail felt intentional without becoming overly elaborate.
Operationally, the shrub was designed with catering in mind. The beverage could be batched in advance for consistency, allowing staff to focus on presentation and guest interaction. Even conversations about what a shrub actually is became part of the experience.
Raising the bar
There isn't one formula for an award-winning beverage program, and that's what makes this category so compelling.
Different approaches. Different audiences. The same goal.
Creating a drink guests remember long after the last glass is cleared.
